Santa Monica, CA 90405

A city that did not think it needed air conditioning, until it did.

Santa Monica spends most of the year under a marine layer that does the cooling for free, which is why a great deal of the housing here was built with no air conditioning at all. Then a heat wave arrives and the phone starts ringing. Three things shape the work here.

Buildings designed around the ocean breeze

Plenty of Santa Monica apartments, bungalows and pre-war buildings have no ducts and no obvious place to put them. Retrofitting a conventional system into one is often more disruptive than the result justifies, which is why ductless is the honest answer here far more often than it is inland. One head per room, a small line set, no reworking the building.

Tight lots, close neighbours, real noise limits

On Santa Monica lots the outdoor unit usually ends up within a few feet of a neighbour, and the city takes residential noise seriously. That constrains placement and sometimes the equipment itself, because a quieter condenser is not optional if there is nowhere else to put it. Worth settling before anything is ordered.

Near enough to the water for salt to matter

Santa Monica is not as harsh on equipment as Point Dume, but it is close enough to the ocean that coils corrode faster than they do a few miles inland. Rinsing the coil and catching corrosion early is most of what extends a system here, and it is the main argument for servicing twice a year rather than once.

Booking

What happens when you call from Santa Monica.

Four steps, and none of them is a sales call. The point of writing them down is that you can hold us to them.

You call or send the form

The number goes to the shop, not to a call center, and the form on this page reaches the same inbox. Tell us the city, what the system is doing, and roughly how old it is.

You get a window, not a day

Booked before 3 PM and we aim for the same day. After 3 PM you are first on the next morning’s board. Either way you get an arrival window rather than a vague promise about Thursday.

A technician diagnoses on site

Nothing is quoted from a photograph or a description over the phone. The technician finds the actual fault, shows you what it is, and prices the repair before touching anything.

You approve the price first

Written down, agreed, then the work starts. If the honest answer is replacement rather than repair, we say so plainly and you are free to take time over it.

Questions

What Santa Monica callers ask first.

Answered without hedging.

Do I really need air conditioning in Santa Monica?

For most of the year, no, and that is exactly why so much of the housing here has none. The question is what happens during the handful of weeks when the marine layer does not show up.

If those weeks are unbearable, a ductless system solves it for the rooms that matter without rebuilding the house for a climate you have eleven months of the year.

My building has no ductwork. What can actually be installed?

Ductless, in almost every case. An indoor head in each room you want to control, a line set through the wall and one outdoor unit, with no ducts forced through a building that was not designed for them.

It is priced per zone. The mini splits page has the detail.

Where can the outdoor unit go on a small lot?

That is the real question on most Santa Monica jobs, and it gets answered on the walkthrough. Placement has to work for access, for airflow, and for the neighbour on the other side of the fence.

Noise limits sometimes decide which equipment is suitable. Better to know that before ordering than after installing.

Is the salt air a problem this far from the beach?

Less than in Malibu, but it is real. Coils here corrode faster than they do inland, and it shortens the life of a system that is never rinsed.

Twice-yearly service is the sensible baseline. The maintenance page covers what is included.

Do you work on apartment buildings and offices here?

Yes, both. Multi-unit residential and commercial suites need the work staged around the people in them, which is planning rather than a house call.

The commercial page covers how that is handled.
